Our global tapestry: a journey of discovery
Growing up, my life was a kaleidoscope of cultures and continents. By the age of ten, I had already lived in seven different countries across three continents. This was long before social media, so my education wasn't confined to a classroom; it was about engaging with people from diverse backgrounds, navigating new ways of life, and learning through genuine connection, despite language barriers. Now in my thirties, I have lived in ten different countries across four continents. These experiences shaped the name 'Beautifully Diverse Fashion', reflecting the belief that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.
From unwanted to reimagined: the art of upcycling
The challenge of preparing for New York Fashion Week without prior experience or extensive resources led to our unique approach. We realised many brands used existing fabrics and had advanced equipment, while we only had a sewing machine. This sparked the idea to use unwanted clothing from people's wardrobes. Inspired by a friend from Chile who upcycled old clothes into scrunchies and bags, we adopted this concept to create our first collection. It was a process of trial and error, but with imagination, we transformed discarded items into new creations. This practice now advocates for reusing fabrics instead of constantly buying new, costly materials.
Wearing a story: connection, imagination, and sustainability
We want people to appreciate the power of reusing fabrics and how a little imagination can go a long way. In today's technological world, it's easy to forget the joy of creating something with your own hands and ideas. While sustainable raw materials like hemp, organic cotton, and vegan leather are wonderful, reusing unwanted clothing offers a dual benefit: it cares for the environment and reduces costs. When we started, we had no inventory or cash flow for new garments, so we made the most of what we had, proving that reproduction of old items into new is incredibly beneficial for our planet.
